Delaware police are asking for the public's help in identifying a child that was found abandoned at a Newark gas station over the weekend.
Investigators have released a picture of the little girl. Police said she was found inside the bathroom of the Shell gas station located at 804 South College Avenue around 2:45 p.m. Sunday.
A person needing to use the restroom heard crying, opened the door, and discovered the young child.
They said she is physically OK but scared. Police said she is unable to speak very well, besides asking for her "Mommy." She has not told them her name.
The girl, believed to be 2-years-old, is African-American and her hair was pulled up onto the top of her head. She was wearing a purple shirt, gold down coat with purple stitching, a size-three purple shirt with flowers, white socks and pink, purple and white sneakers. Police said she has pierced ears, although she wasn't wearing any earrings.
The gas station clerk doesn't remember giving anyone with a little girl the key to the unisex bathroom.
The Shell station surveillance system was not working, so there's no video for who came and went.
If you know this child, you're asked to call Newark police right away at 302-366-7111. You can also text your tip to 302NPD to make an anonymous report.
